Back to Blogs

Emma O'Connor has brought her unique journey and technical expertise to Matrix Recruitment, where she now thrives in the Technical Recruitment team. From studying Food and Business Management to working in recruitment internationally, Emma has consistently pursued growth, development, and connection with people. We sat down with Emma to learn more about her background, insights, and experiences with Matrix.

1. What is your background?

While studying in school and college, I worked part-time as a waitress for six years. During this time, I earned my Bachelor's in Applied Science, Food, and Business Management from St. Angela's. My first role was as a Technical Assistant in a bakery manufacturing company, where I gained foundational industry knowledge. After two years, I traveled to Vancouver, where I "fell into recruitment," continuing this career path in Melbourne. Six months ago, I returned to Ireland and decided to pursue my passion for recruitment with Matrix.

2. Can you describe your current role - what's your typical day-to-day?

At Matrix, I’m part of the Technical Team, recruiting for Quality, Laboratory, Engineering, and Technician roles. My day starts with checking emails and posting new roles. A significant portion of my day involves reviewing CVs, screening applicants, sourcing candidates, and conducting interviews. I also stay updated on job market trends, analyse future hiring needs, and handle admin tasks like updating Excel sheets and databases.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the impact recruitment has on people’s careers. It’s incredibly rewarding to tell candidates that their hard work has paid off after weeks or even months in the interview process. Plus, I’m constantly learning! Each interaction with candidates and hiring managers provides new insights into various industries and the recruitment landscape.

4. What is your favourite thing about the team, and why have you stayed at Matrix Recruitment?

The team at Matrix is incredibly welcoming and supportive. Starting a new role can be daunting, but from day one, I felt at ease here. The team’s friendliness, sense of humor, and positive energy made a huge difference. I stay because I know that Matrix will continue to help me grow. Recruitment has so many facets, and Matrix provides the environment and support I need to become the best recruiter I can be.

5. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a Recruitment Consultant?

Take the highs with the lows. Recruitment is rewarding when you help someone land their dream job, but it can be disappointing when things fall through. Especially in the early stages of a recruitment career, there will be ups and downs, but the key is to keep going and stay resilient.

6. What are the three key skills you need to excel as a Recruitment Consultant?

  • Communication Skills: Clear, consistent communication builds trust and manages expectations for both candidates and hiring managers.

  • Initiative: A proactive approach to sourcing and networking is essential in a competitive market.

  • Resilience: Setbacks are common in recruitment, but resilience helps maintain a positive outlook and adapt to challenges.

7. What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

My greatest personal achievement is taking the plunge to travel for two years.

8. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

“No matter how many times you get knocked down, keep getting back up.”

9. If you had one superpower, what would it be?

To read minds!

10. What are you watching/reading at the moment?

With Christmas approaching, I’m watching the Harry Potter series—it’s tradition!

Emma’s journey highlights the exciting potential of taking unexpected paths. Her passion for recruitment, eagerness to learn, and commitment to helping others shine through in every interaction she has at Matrix. We’re excited to see where Emma’s skills and dedication will take her next!
