1. What is your background?

I am currently a Senior Technical Recruitment Team Leader specialising in engineering, quality & lab, and manufacturing roles. My experience includes working with both SMEs and multinational companies across the Southeast and Munster regions in Ireland. I hold a Graduate Diploma in Information Technology from DCU and a Bachelor of Business in International Business from SETU.

2. Can you describe your current role—what's your typical day-to-day?

My typical day is a blend of client and candidate management. I start by reviewing job requirements from clients and tailoring my search strategies accordingly. A significant portion of my time is dedicated to sourcing candidates, reviewing CVs, and conducting interviews to assess skills and cultural fit. I maintain regular communication with clients, presenting candidates and negotiating terms. Additionally, I engage in business development, networking, and market research, alongside administrative tasks like updating databases. Every day is dynamic and fast-paced—no two days are the same, and things can change rapidly.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I love most is the variety and the human connections my job fosters. It's incredibly rewarding to match talented candidates with their dream jobs while helping businesses grow. I thrive on the challenge of diving into different industries and roles; it takes creativity to find that perfect match. The mix of collaborating with clients, coaching candidates, and focusing on business development keeps things exciting. Ultimately, seeing the positive impact of a successful placement makes it all worthwhile!

4. You’ve been part of the Matrix Recruitment team for 13 years now. What is your favourite thing about the team, and why have you stayed with the company?

Work-Life Balance:

One of the aspects I value most about working at Matrix Recruitment is the flexibility in my schedule. Being able to pick up my kids when needed without disrupting my work is incredibly helpful. The company genuinely understands the importance of balancing personal responsibilities with work commitments.

Supportive Work Environment:

The team culture is incredibly supportive. Colleagues and managers are always willing to help and provide guidance, creating a collaborative and welcoming workplace. This supportive environment is a key reason I’ve stayed with the company for so long.

5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Recruitment Consultant in Engineering & Quality & Lab?

For those looking to become a Recruitment Consultant in Engineering, my advice is to build strong industry knowledge and foster genuine relationships. Understanding the technical skills required for various roles is crucial. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are essential to match the right candidates with the right opportunities. Be adaptable, as the industry evolves quickly. Finally, patience and perseverance are vital; while recruitment can be rewarding, it also requires dedication and hard work!

6. What are the three key skills you need to excel as a Recruitment Consultant in Engineering & Quality & Lab?

  1. Technical Knowledge: Understanding the engineering field and its specific roles helps you effectively match candidates with opportunities.

  2. Communication Skills: Building strong relationships with clients and candidates necessitates clear and effective communication to convey expectations and feedback.

  3. Resilience: This is vital in recruitment, particularly in engineering, where the landscape can be unpredictable with fluctuating demand and lengthy hiring processes. Resilience allows you to navigate setbacks, maintain a positive outlook, adapt to challenges, and bounce back from rejections, ultimately leading to stronger relationships and greater success in a competitive field.

7. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

The best advice I’ve received is to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. Instead of fearing mistakes, I view them as chances to grow and gain insights. This mindset helps me tackle new challenges with resilience and reminds me that the journey is just as valuable as the destination.

8. What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and have a passion for music and singing. I love taking outdoor walks with my boys to help them burn off energy. To stay fit, I focus on weighted exercises, which keep me feeling energised.
